ETFE

What is ETFE?

ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) is a clear fluoropolymer material known for its exceptional properties. It is a lightweight and highly durable material that offers several advantages in different applications. ETFE is widely used in building, construction and engineering projects due to its excellent performance characteristics. ETFE is a highly transparent extruded film that can be used as a single layer film or as a multi-layer pneumatic inflatable cushion. The material has good UV stability as well as chemical and heat resistance. Weighing only 1% of the weight of glass, this material is revolutionizing the construction industry, allowing us to build structures that were previously unimaginable.

Single-layer ETFE structure (mechanically prestressed)

ETFE can be used as a single layer membrane and tensioned with wire rope, lightweight steel or aluminum to maintain shape and stability.

Multilayer ETFE structure (aerodynamically prestressed)

Aerodynamic pads are created in two or more layers, then connected using aluminum extrusions and supported by a lightweight structure. Filled with low-pressure air, these pads provide insulation and structural stability to resist wind or snow loads. If needed, small cables can be used to provide additional tension and support. Under typical load conditions, ETFE pads range in width from 5 to 15 feet and in lengths up to 200 feet.

ETFE membranes require less structural steel support than traditional glass systems, making them easier to install and often a lower-cost alternative. It is often considered the value engineering option for glass roofs. ETFE membrane roofs are available as a single layer membrane supported by a cable net system or as a series of aerodynamic mats consisting of two to five layers of ETFE.

What is ETFE used for?

ETFE is widely used due to its unique properties. It is commonly used in construction projects to create transparent roofs, canopies and facades. It is also used in the construction of sports stadiums, airports, shopping malls and other large structures. Additionally, ETFE is widely used in a variety of industrial and scientific applications that require chemical resistance, high tensile strength, and transparency.
